ShapeWorks Q&A

ShapeWorks Q&A

David Heber, M.D., Ph.D., F.A.C.P., F.A.C.N., Director of the Center for Human Nutrition at UCLA and Chairman of Herbalife’s Scientific and Medical Advisory Boards, answers some of your most frequently asked questions about the ShapeWorks® Program.*

Q: How does the ShapeWorks® Program relate to what Herbalife has provided for the last 24 years?

A: The ShapeWorks® Program extends the concept of Cellular Nutrition and builds on the successful legacy of Herbalife’s Formula 1, which has been on the market for 24 years. Cellular Nutrition means giving your body what it needs-nutrition that is missing from the modern diet. Protein satisfies hunger and many people don’t get enough protein in their diets to control hunger and build or maintain their muscles. The ShapeWorks® Program is personalized for each dieter’s needs.

Q: How is ShapeWorks® different from other popular diets?

Why Herbalife SPF Daily?

Why Herbalife SPF Daily?

By Herbalife Staff Writer

Our skin is the largest organ of the body and often the most neglected. It is our first line of defense against pollutants, ultraviolet violet (UV) radiation and other environmental factors.

A regular skin regimen coupled with SPF sunscreen and topical antioxidants has proven effective in minimizing the damaging effects of the environment as well as helping to protect skin health.

Sunlight and Healthy Skin

Short bursts of time in the sun help the body to naturally produce vitamin D. The UV rays from sunlight stimulate vitamin D synthesis, which in turn supports calcium absorption to form and maintain strong bones.

Excessive exposure to sunlight without sunscreen, however, can result in sunburn and greatly increase one’s risk of developing skin cancer. UV radiation from the sun is increasing globally due to what scientists describe as the Earth’s depleting ozone layer. It strikes Earth as either UV-A or UV-B radiation (long and short wavelengths of ultraviolet light).

Cleanse, Tone & Moisturize for Healthier Skin

Cleanse, Tone & Moisturize for Healthier Skin

By Herbalife Staff Writer

No matter what your age or skin type, your skin can be healthier, look younger and feel smoother if you know how to take care of it. And that comes down to three simple steps:

  • Cleanse
  • Tone
  • Moisturize

"Cleansing, toning and moisturizing go hand-in-hand," says Dr. Luigi Gratton, Vice President, Medical Affairs and Education at Herbalife. "Your skin is your body’s largest organ. It keeps much-needed moisture in the body to keep it healthy while keeping dangerous pollutants out, so it’s important to nourish your skin as much as the rest of your body. Even if your skin is not sensitive, the wrong products can dry and even damage your skin."

Getting to the Heart of Heartburn

Getting to the Heart of Heartburn

Susan Bowerman, MS, RD, CSSD

If you love eating spicy, greasy foods – but pay for it afterwards with a case of heartburn and acid indigestion – you’re not alone. These symptoms strike millions of people daily, and we spend billions of dollars annually on medications to quench the fire.

At the root of the problem is a bit of faulty plumbing in the digestive tract. At the bottom of the esophagus, where it meets the stomach, lies a ring of muscle designed to close of the stomach entrance.

When pressure on this muscle is reduced, stomach contents can back up into the esophagus and lead to discomfort. Along with heartburn and acid regurgitation, other symptoms like coughing, hoarseness and chest pain may tag along.

Fatty foods, chocolate, peppermint and onions cause heartburn directly – they reduce the pressure on the ring of muscle which allows it to relax. Large meals distend the stomach, and this can also lead to reduced pressure and discomfort.

Healthy Snack Tricks for Halloween

Healthy Snack Tricks for Halloween

Susan Bowerman, MS, RD, CSSD

For kids – and more than a few adults – Halloween is one of the best holidays around. But there are healthier ways to treat yourself, and other costumed revelers, to help avoid welcoming November in a sugar haze.

Controlling what kids eat during a candy-focused holiday is no easy task. "While the holiday seems to be all about the candy, it’s wise to help kids to focus on the fun and to set some limits," says Dr. Luigi Gratton, vice president of medical affairs at Herbalife. "Make sure the kids have a healthy meal or snack before they leave, and negotiate ahead of time how much candy they’ll be allowed to keep and eat," he adds.

Start the evening with a fun, healthy meal. Offer ‘finger food’ – wrap a string cheese stick with a slice of turkey, then top with a slivered almond ‘fingernail’. Spaghetti ‘worms’ and a black-and-orange fruit salad made with fresh oranges, raisins and dark grapes can help set the mood. If the kids are in a rush to get out the door, whip up a Halloween pumpkin smoothie.

Fat Free, Sugar Free, Calorie Free

Fat Free, Sugar Free, Calorie Free

Susan Bowerman, MS, RD, CSSD

It’s been some time since the fat-free food craze began, but with ongoing reports of the downside of eating too much dietary fat, food manufacturers continue to tempt us with literally thousands of low fat and fat-free foods on supermarket shelves. But buyers should beware – foods designated as light, lowfat or fat-free may not save you calories.

Some of the labels on the first fat-modified foods screamed "light" – leading unwary shoppers to conclude that the products could be eaten with abandon. Only on closer inspection of the nutrition facts was it apparent that many "light" products weren’t necessarily lighter in calories, dashing hopes for truly guilt-free snacks and sweets.

Losing Weight May Add Years to Your Life

Losing Weight May Add Years to Your Life

The first step to achieving good health is getting your weight under control. New studies confirm that obesity is on the rise, bringing with it a greater risk of diabetes and a lower life expectancy.

Obesity linked with premature death
In January 2003, the Journal of the American Medical Association featured a study that found that obesity appears to lessen life expectancy, especially among young adults. The researchers compared Body-Mass Index (BMI) to longevity and found a correlation between premature death and higher BMIs. For example, a 20-year-old white male, 5’10” weighing 288 pounds with a BMI of greater than 40 was estimated to lose 13 years of his life as a result of obesity. While this study referenced extreme levels of obesity, there are still millions of overweight Americans with a life expectancy rate that is three to five years less than their healthy-weight counterparts.

Eat Your Fruits & Veggies

Eat Your Fruits & Veggies

By Luigi Gratton, M.D., M.P.H.

When our mothers told us to eat our fruits and vegetables, they were right. They are an essential part of our diet, providing a wide range of vitamins and minerals that serve an array of important functions in the body. Many people, however, are still deficient in their fruit and vegetable intake.

Not getting the message
Over the last several years, the U.S. Department of Health has recommended eating at least five portions of fruits and vegetables a day. Yet, only one in seven achieve this quota. In fact, one-third of American adults eat only two servings of fruits and vegetables a day and are four times more likely to choose a processed snack instead. On any given day, about half the population eats no fruit at all.
