Healthy Diet Plan

What is a Healthy Diet?

There are more and more people interested in a healthy diet plan than ever before. The question we may be asking is, why has it taken so long to realize how damaging a poor diet can have on our bodies? The good news is that healthy food and a healthy diet is receiving much media attention, and we are becoming more conscious about what we eat.

With the recent 60 minutes profile of California food activist Alice Waters and the announcement of the White House Vegetable Garden, healthy food is certainly receiving attention across the nation. With the high profile White House Vegetable Garden, the First Lady hopes to educate children about the importance of a healthy diet plan and the need to think local when it comes to our food choices.

So what exactly is a healthy diet and a healthy diet plan? There are many people with varying opinions about this. If you ask Alice Waters, she will say healthy food is fresh, organic and sustainable and without pesticides and herbicides. That certainly makes sense. And according to the USDA’s food guide pyramid, a Healthy Diet Plan is one that:

  • Includes fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and fat-free or low-fat milk and milk products.
  • Is low in saturated fats, trans fats, cholesterol, salt (sodium), and added sugars.
  • Includes lean meats, poultry, fish, beans, eggs, and nuts.

Pay close attention to your portion sizes. Some of the recommended portion sizes in the food guide pyramid are much more than the size of portions recommended in other countries.

Most importantly, be sensible about what you eat. These guidelines should begin to form the foundation of a healthy diet plan for you and your family.
