Childhood Obesity

Childhood Obesity Childhood obesity is certainly a very real problem today. So often today we see casual dining restaurants with televisions installed in their booths. Sometimes I’ve even seen parents set a portable television in front of their children while eating out at a restaurant. The thing is, children who watch TV while eating are twice as likely to eat "junk" food as opposed to fruits and vegetables. Too much junk food can play a part in childhood obesity.

Thankfully, there is a very strong trend toward health and wellness. The industry is exploding and people are more health conscious than ever before. Unfortunately, too many children continue to suffer from obesity due in large part to poor dietary habits and a sedentary lifestyle. This not only raises the risk of childhood obesity, but also that of diabetes, osteoporosis and other disorders. There are certainly ways to reverse this alarming trend of overweight children.

According to a Herbalife Staff Writer,

The ‘out-of-control’ lifestyles fashioned by the adults of the past 40 years has led to a 50% increase in the diagnosis of Type 2 diabetes – the kind of diabetes that used to be known as ‘adult onset’ because this obesity-related disorder wasn’t usually diagnosed until age 50 or older!

Making Health and Good Nutrition a Family Matter

If we begin to be more conscious of the issue of childhood obesity, and place an emphasis on eating healthy foods and increasing activity levels in our children, we have a chance of reversing these alarming trends. To begin a weight loss program for overweight children, be sure the child has been evaluated by a medical doctor to assure there are no reasons why losing weight would be a problem. Children can begin their day with MultiVites or Kindermins multivitamins and a children’s shake made with nonfat milk or soy milk.

Stopping the Childhood Obesity Epidemic

As the parent, you have the ability to make the choice for a healthy lifestyle for your children. Set the example of picking up an apple instead of an ice-cream bar. If you smoke, start a program to help you quit smoking. Turn off the television or computer and play some activities and games with your children, or go for a walk. Let’s cut down on childhood obesity and overweight children and make this century the century of wellness!
